Kayseri

Kayseri is the capital of Cappadocia. In this region there’s a small town called Avanos. Besides its spectacular landscape of rock cones and capped pinnacles, the town is famous around the world for its traditional handicraft artistry.

The designs are generally medallion motifs or what is known as the 1,001 nights floral design.

The best-known rugs from this district are those produced in the 20th century, largely for sale to tourists and undiscriminating collectors. Free imitations of Ghiordes, Persian, or Cairene designs, they are carried out in wool, silk, mercerized cotton, or, more recently, rayon. Inscriptions appearing in these rugs are usually unreadable.
